How Do You Plan?

Planning… such an essential component of education. There is a definite scope and sequence to our work. A process that supports effective instruction and classroom management. When we plan we consider so many factors; curriculum, test scores, class size, time, resources, classroom management, systems and routines, just to name a few. Each derived from expectations around the learning outcomes of the students we teach.

If we believe that our Role on the educational team is to support student access to the general education teacher, then the lens we look through for our planning should include the learning outcomes and inclinations of EVERY student.  When our focus shifts we consider:

The student that is developing their ability to focus on instruction and needs specific seating and opportunities to move.

The student that is just learning the official language and will need supports to understand instruction.

The student that is developing their expressive language and will need alternate means of communication.

The student that is developing their social skills when working with a partner or in a group.

The student with physical disabilities that present challenges when navigating their environment.

The student that is learning multiplication and the curriculum focus is fractions.

The student that is developing their receptive language skills and needs visuals and repeated instructions to support their understanding.

The student that is developing their ability to regulate.

The student that is developing their ability to express their emotional needs in a proactive manner.

The student that is learning letter identification and the curriculum focus is literary components.

The student that is developing their flexible thinking.

The student that is developing their independence and advocacy skills.

This is by no means an exhaustive list but it is highly representative of students within our school communities, students that should have their learning outcomes met through the access of their general education teacher.
